Frequently Asked Questions
Here is our FAQ about the main features of STIRVOX. Do not forget to read our "about STIRVOX" page.
STIRVOX is an ad-free, no-charge and secure-by-design crowdsourcing network for creation of surveys, polls and quizzes and participation in them.
Crowdsourcing means that surveys are created by our users and the answers also come from the users of STIRVOX community.
Secure-by-design means that we use various encryption and anonymization techniques to allow you expressing your opinion securely and anonymously (read section about privacy and anonymity below for more information).
Examples of surveys at the main page of STIRVOX
We want to re-design the way people express their opinions. To achieve this, STIRVOX combines science, game and crowdsourcing approach.
STIRVOX is about science, because the results of surveys are collected and analyzed in the scientifically correct way. This allows us representing opinions of different social groups, when we reach the minimum amount of respondents. It means that you get the trustful information about opinions of other people.
STIRVOX is game-like because we show you how your opinion passes to opinions of people, who are similar to you (same age, gender, country, etc.), and to opinions of your friends from social networks. We also show you the social group, which thinks the most similar to you (check out section “What is cluster” for more details).
Clusters at STIRVOX
STIRVOX is crowdsourcing because our content is created by people for people. Surveys at the website are created by our users, and the answers also come from the users of STIRVOX community.
STIRVOX is secure-by-design. We use modern encryption and anonymization techniques to avoid disclosing of information about individual users and their answers in surveys.
We made STIRVOX secure from the very beginning, because, first, we like privacy and anonymity ourselves. Second, we want to have a tool that helps people in opinion research, so we do not collect, neither sell your private data and do not target any kind of advertisement at you.
Frankly speaking, we are not even interested in the opinions of single individuals (there are already many places on the Web, where you can find what each single individual thinks about different topics, right? ;) Instead, we are interested in aggregated opinions of different social groups. So, for us it is not really important, whether Karl thinks "A" or “B”, but it’s important to know whether the social group, which Karl belongs to, thinks “A” or “B”. An example of such social group can be «IT-engineers from Berlin (Germany) at the age of 30-45». That is why survey answers of each single individual are anonymized and aggregated.
We also encrypt your answers to each survey. Technically speaking, we create a “pseudo-user”, who is linked to your user profile at STIRVOX, but this linkage is encrypted using strong security mechanism.
To make your answers even more secure, we anonymize your user account. For instance, we remove any linkage between your email and your other user information. It means that after you complete the registration we cannot allocate your email to your username anymore. For us only social characteristics (such age, gender, country, etc.) are important, we do not want to know anything about your personal identity (name, address, etc.).
No. STIRVOX shows only aggregated and anonymized statistics. Moreover, answers of each individual user are encrypted and anonymized. For us only social characteristics (such age, gender, country, etc.) are important, we do not want to know anything about your personal identity (name, address, etc.).
STIRVOX is a crowdsourcing network, so our main objective is to help people better understand opinions of each other. Another objective is to give a voice to all the people from different cities and countries, i.e. give them a service to express their opinions in a way that the opinion matters. Finally, STIRVOX combines opinions on hot topics and trends and presents various viewpoints in form of infographics that is easy to understand.
STIRVOX discloses the majority of collected data for our registered users for free. We also do not collect any private data (name, address, birthday, etc.) and do not target any kind of advertisement at our users.
Moreover, STIRVOX is secure-by-design. It means that we use various encryption and anonymization techniques to allow you expressing your opinion securely and anonymously.
You can use STIRVOX without registration, but then the usage is limited. For unregistered users we have the following limitations:
- Unregistered users can see the results only for three surveys .
- Unregistered users can only see results that are aggregated for all countries, i.e. opinions of people in each separate country are not available.
- Unregistered users cannot compare their answers to friends from social networks and people, who are similar to them.
- Unregistered users cannot create own surveys.
- Unregistered users cannot write and rate comments.
By registering, you get full access to all available features. The registration is completely free.
The following table summarizes the difference between unregistered and registered users:

Sign up with social networks. It takes you less than a minute.
You will see surveys only in the languages that you have specified during the registration. For example, if you speak French and English and want to express your opinion on topics in these languages you have to select both of them.
You can change your languages in your user profile later, if you see too many or too few surveys at the home page.
Currently, you can create and participate in surveys in 6 languages:
Being connected to a social network (), gives you an opportunity to compare own opinion with opinions of your friends. You can also see clusters of your friends, i.e. how your friends think in relation to the whole STIRVOX community.
To connect a social network account to an existing user account at STIRVOX, go to your profile and click “Edit social accounts” in bottom-left corner of the page.

Moreover, if you are signed in STIRVOX with a social network (), you can see two additional clusters: how close your opinion is to the opinion of your friends and how your friends have answered like.
Once you have answered a survey, you see the results page. For each question, you can either see overall results or apply one of 11 filters, which are placed in the filter bar under the question title:
Filter bar (click it! It's interactive)
Available filters are:
- No filter (overall results)
- Age group
- Level of income
- State / Region
- City Type
- Preferred political party
- Political Preferences
- Marital status
- Friends (opinions of friends from social networks)
Clicking on the filter, you will see the corresponding statistics, i.e. answers of people from various groups of this filter. For example, selecting the gender filter, you can see how opinions of men and women vary on the selected question.
All filters are available to registered users. However, to use a certain filter, you need to specify the corresponding information about yourself. It allows the STIRVOX community better understanding the opinion of the social group that you represent. You can feel secure, because we encrypt and anonymize information about you and your answers.
Small icons under filter bar indicate various representations of the data. You can see the same results in form of bar and pie charts, tables and geo maps.
Chart bar (click it! It's interactive)
You can share survey image as well as all clusters that are available to you. Just place the mouse over survey image or cluster to share it on Facebook, Twitter or Google+.
For ongoing surveys, you cannot share any infographics if the survey is not finished yet. We prohibit it to prevent biasing and manipulations of results.
The demographics section shows, what kind of people have taken part in the survey. You can see the contribution of each group of people per filter, e.g. how many respondents were teenagers and how many were middle age among all respondents, who specified their age. This helps you to understand the overall results presented in infographic charts.
On the main page, you can use filters to select surveys by category (lifestyle, politics, sport, etc.), popularity and date of creation. Moreover, you can find surveys, which were created or answered by citizens of your country or by your friends from social networks.
Moreover, after finishing a survey you will see section “Recommended surveys” at the bottom of the page.
To see surveys created by some user, click on his username in the bottom right corner of the survey at the home page.
Alternatively, after finishing a survey you will see section “Recommended surveys” at the bottom of the page. There you can also see surveys, created by the same author.
User points are used for ranking of users. You can see, who have committed the most to the STIRVOX community. Users get points when they take part in survey, rate a survey, write or rate a comment.
As a survey author, you receive points, when registered users participate in your surveys. Additionally, you need certain amount of points to create a survey. This is required to prevent users from creating many surveys that nobody is interested in. But don’t worry, if you have zero points. They will automatically recover next day so that you will be able to create a survey again.
